Teaching Ethical Use of AI in Education

in

Because let’s face it, we all know that if left unchecked, these little robots will take over our schools and turn them into a dystopian nightmare straight out of Black Mirror.

To begin with: what is “ethical” use of AI? Well, for starters, it means not using ChatGPT to write your entire paper or cheat on tests. That’s just plain wrong, people! Instead, we want our students to learn how to use these tools responsibly and with integrity.

So here are some tips for teaching the kiddos:

1) Start by introducing them to AI as a tool that can help them learn, not replace their brains. Explain that it’s like having an extra set of eyes or ears in class something they can use to supplement their own learning and understanding.

2) Teach them how to use AI responsibly. This means showing them how to properly cite sources when using AI for research, as well as how to avoid plagiarism by paraphrasing and summarizing information instead of copying it verbatim.

3) Encourage critical thinking skills. Help your students learn how to analyze the output from AI tools and evaluate its accuracy and reliability. This will help them develop a better understanding of what’s true and what’s not, which is an important skill in today’s world of fake news and misinformation.

4) Teach them about privacy concerns. Explain that their personal information may be collected by AI tools, and how to protect themselves from data breaches and other security issues. Encourage them to read the terms and conditions carefully before using any new tool or app.

5) Finally, teach them about the potential benefits of AI in education. Show them how it can help students with disabilities or learning differences, as well as how it can provide personalized feedback and support for all learners. Encourage them to think creatively about how they can use these tools to enhance their own learning experiences.
