Today’s lineup includes Waymo, Cruise, Pony AI, and Zoox four companies that are making waves in the self-driving car industry.
To begin, Waymo. These guys have been around for a while now and they’re pretty much the OG of autonomous vehicles. They started as Google’s self-driving project back in 2009 and since then, they’ve racked up over 15 million miles on public roads. That’s impressive, but let’s be real it’s not like they were just cruising around goallessly. Waymo has been testing their vehicles in some of the most challenging environments out there, including Phoenix and San Francisco.
Now, Cruise. These guys are owned by General Motors (GM) and have been making waves with their self-driving technology for a few years now. They recently announced that they will be launching a commercial service in 2023, which is pretty exciting news. But here’s the thing they haven’t quite hit the same mileage numbers as Waymo yet. As of last year, Cruise had only logged around 1 million miles on public roads. That’s still impressive, but it’s a far cry from Waymo’s 15 million.
Next up is Pony AI. These guys are based in China and have been making some serious strides in the autonomous vehicle space. They recently announced that they will be launching their first commercial service in Guangzhou, which is pretty exciting news for anyone who lives there (or wants to visit). But here’s the thing Pony AI has only logged around 10 million miles on public roads. That’s still impressive, but it’s not quite as many as Waymo or Cruise.
Finally, we have Zoox. These guys are based in California and have been making some serious waves with their self-driving technology. They recently announced that they will be launching a commercial service in Las Vegas later this year (fingers crossed). But here’s the thing Zoox has only logged around 5 million miles on public roads. That’s still impressive, but it’s not quite as many as Waymo or Cruise or Pony AI.
A quick comparison of some of the biggest players in autonomous vehicle technology. As you can see, Waymo is leading the pack with over 15 million miles on public roads. But that doesn’t mean that Cruise, Pony AI, and Zoox aren’t making serious strides they all have impressive numbers as well.
In terms of which company we think will come out on top in the long run? Well, it’s hard to say for sure. But one thing is certain autonomous vehicle technology is here to stay and these companies are just scratching the surface of what’s possible.
Until next time, keep on techin’!
